Perspectives on Health System Reform
Dr. Joseph Jarvis of the Utah Healthcare Initiative spoke about health system reform at the 37th Annual Arizona Rural Health Conference in Flagstaff, Arizona on August 3, 2010. The title of his talk was "Health System Reform Below the Rim: Procrastinating Steepness."
During his talk, Dr. Jarvis said, “I am persuaded that in fact what just passed in Washington is not really reform. It’s not even really historic. Its not a landmark. It is in fact an example of something we’ve done over and over and over again in health policy in our country at least for the past 50 years. It’s a well traveled path and it gets us nowhere.... In the end it is a mirage of coverage that we’ve passed, not real coverage, and that is the thesis I want to work with today.”
“We have a chasm of poor quality to cross before we actually make headway for our patients."
