Given the ongoing transformation of the health and public health system in the U.S., it is essential for Arizona to collect, compile, analyze and report on the health workforce. It is important to provide data-driven solutions to address the existing maldistribution of the health workforce. This maldistribution creates workforce shortages and constrained access to care for populations based on geography, social-demographic, and other factors.
Education, training, retention and support for the rural health workforce is a core element of the mission of the Arizona Center for Rural Health (AzCRH). Workforce research is essential to making data-driven decision on health workforce policies and programs. AzCRH has published multiple reports on the health workforce since 2007.
The AzCRH health workforce data and analysis effort compiles, synthesizes and analyzes health workforce data and shares the data with public, policy-makers, and public health and healthcare stakeholders through online data visualization and other reports. The primary focus of the health workforce project is the creation of the Arizona Health Workforce Data System (AzHWDS). Data from the AzHWDS is used for the core Arizona Health Workforce Profile Report in the first tab below.

Welcome to the workforce profile report for the Arizona Health Workforce Data System
The purpose of this profile report is to provide a single source for information about the number and distribution of the health workforce in Arizona. You can review the methods for the report here.
Currently, this data is compiled using data requested from the Arizona licensing boards for the following professions:
- Behavior Analysts
- Counselors
- Marriage and Family Therapists
- Physicians
- Physician Assistants
- Nurses
- Psychologists
- Social Workers
- Substance Abuse Counselors
The Arizona Medical Board, Arizona Board of Osteopathic Examiners, Arizona Psychologist Examiners Board, Arizona Board of Behavioral Health Examiners, and Arizona State Board of Nursing provided data for this report.
The health workforce data for the professions included in this report is presented by different geography groupings including county, rurality (using Rural Urban Commuting Area or RUCA codes), Zip Code Tabulation Areas (ZCTAs), Tribal Areas, and Arizona legislative districts. For more detailed information on these geographies please reference the methods document.

How To Use this Report
- To open the Profile Report, click on the image or link above.
- This report uses maps and bar charts to display data on the count and the provider per population ratios, for selected geographic areas. You can use the filters above the map to select a profession and sub-geography of interest. The filters start with all professions and all sub-geographies selected.
- To select one profession from the filter dropdown list, deselect the Select All box and click on the box next to the profession you want to view. To select more than one profession, simply select the checkboxes next to all the professions you want to include (you may need to hold down the ctrl key as you select). To reset the filter click the the Select All checkbox.
- To the right of the filters you can select if you want to view a count of the data or the provider per 10,000 population ratio. The map and the charts will automatically update based on the filters you have selected.
- Use your cursor to hover over the map areas or the charts to view additional data and information.
