Dr Derksen quoted in article on migrant health care

In a look at the cost of health care for migrants in Arizona, Dr. Derksen weighs in on the hidden cost of withholding care. 

The article, which was published by the Arizona Republic, looks at the effects that migrants have on costs to health care systems in Arizona. 

"It makes no sense to ratchet up the fear" among migrants of accessing necessary care like care for children and pregnant women, said Dr. Dan Derksen, director of the Center for Rural Health at the University of Arizona. He is a physician who has practiced in two border states, Arizona and New Mexico. "You don’t save costs by not funding those services," he wrote in an email. "The costs in terms of maternal and child morbidity and mortality are devastating to those individuals, their families and to society."
