Welcome to the Arizona Graduate Medical Education Report

This report summarizes the financial support for Graduate Medical Education (GME) training programs (e.g., residency programs that physicians must complete before practicing independently) in Arizona. The federal Medicare program is the primary funder of GME. States can also support GME training through their Medicaid programs. Medicare and Medicaid programs provide 90% of the total GME training support. This report aims to contextualize this funding in Arizona to better inform health workforce related programs and policies.

About the Data

This report presents data on Medicare and Medicaid GME funding in Arizona. The Medicare data in this report are available from the Robert Graham Center. The Medicare data in this report presents the total Medicare GME payments, a sum of Direct (DGME) and Indirect (IME) payments from Medicare. Both DGME and IME payments are based on Medicare patient volume. All Medicare data is included in the USA Medicare GME Funds page. Only data from complete cost-reports (full 12 months) were included in the analysis for Arizona hospitals, i.e., partial year reports are excluded. This means some hospitals may be missing data for some years.

The Medicaid data are from the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS) reports on Graduate Medical Education Payments.
